Carlos Couto

Full Professor of the Department of Industrial Electronics of the Engineering School of the University of Minho.Born at February of 1950 in Mozambique, he graduated in Electrical Engineering(1972) by the University of Lourenço Marques (Mozambique), obtained his M.Sc.and Ph.D. degrees by the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology(UMIST), United Kingdom, in 1979 and 1981, respectively, and in 1994 he madeaggregation examination for the University of Minho. He started his teaching careerin 1972 at the University of Lourenço Marques, teaching at the University ofMinho Since 1976. Having initiated his career has Eventual Assistant in 1976ascended to Assistant Lecturer, in 1982 to Assistant Professor, in 1986 toAssociate Professor and in 1995 to Full Professor. He was founder of theDepartment of Industrial Electronics (1989) and proposer of the graduation inIndustrial Electronics Engineering of the University of Minho (1988).He is theauthor of over 170 publications, most of them in conferences and internationaljournals. He is also co-inventor of an European patent about a self-calibratedpyrometer, and has written a book called “Introduction to Industrial Robotics”,published by Universidade Aberta. He is a senior member of the IEEE-Instituteof Electrical and Electronics Engineers (USA), belonging to the direction ofthe Industrial Electronics Society, from January 1998 to December 1999 as amember of the Administrative Committee (AdCom), from January 2000 to December2001 as chief editor of the Newsletter, from January 2002 to December 2003 asVice-President for conferences, from January 2004 to December 2004 asVice-President for Technical Activities and since January 2005 as a member ofthe Administrative Committee (AdCom), having passed to senior member in November 2006.
